Why I'm Sad

I understand that family are concerned about this year's gathering. More rumors than facts are swirling around and folks on the land (in what ever state that is) are doing good work to create a safe and peaceful gathering. The situation online is awful and disheartening.

What is breaking my heart is the mean-spirited way in which family is addressing other people online.  I had to take most of yesterday off from dealing with this as I couldn't see clearly and with respect for all people. Why do we speak this way to each other online when we treat each other with so much more love and respect when we can touch each other?  I think everyone online needs to go take a walk in the woods, the canyons, or the beaches -- whatever is near you.

Is this what the way of peace looks like?  I am so disappointed in so many of you.  Why are we not practicing ways of Creating Peace online?

We are strong willed family, but perhaps now is the time to stop talking and go do what every it is you feel in your heart is the best thing to do, in what ever state is in your heart to go to, with what ever people you feel in your heart to gather with and create peace.

Can we all just take a break, meditate, pray, practice yoga or what ever it is that helps you ground your energy?  We need you, but we need a calm, focused, and grounded you.

Om shanti shanti shanti

We, who are brothers & sisters, children of spirit, families of life on earth, friends of nature & of all people, children of humankind calling ourselves the rainbow gathering, humbly invite:
All races, peoples, tribes, communes, men, women, children, individuals -- out of love.
All nations & national leaders -- out of respect
All religions & religious leaders -- out of faith
All politicians -- out of charity
to join with us in gathering together for the purpose of expressing our sincere desire that there shall be peace on earth, harmony among all people. This gathering to take place July 1-7, 2015, in the sacred Black Hills of occupied Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho territory & to hold open worship, prayer, chanting or whatever is the want or desire of the people, but upon the fourth day of July until noon to ask that there be a meditative, contemplative silence wherein we, the invited people of the world may consider & give honour & respect to anyone or anything that has aided in the positive evolution of humankind & nature upon this, our most beloved & beautiful world -- asking blessing upon we people of this world & hope that we people can effectively proceed to evolve, expand, & live in harmony & peace.

Please be respectful of the First Nations' land, culture, and spirituality. Indigenous people have asked us not to imitate indigenous cultures.

We love you!

  1. Western culture is so sad. Americans have never had a true cultural identity. All we have ever done is imitate indigenous cultures of others. Protestant Christians? They copy Jewish people from ancient Judaea. Catholics copy people from Italy. Buddhists, Hindu, etc, etc. It's too bad that Native American people don't see that people imitate their ways out of respect and a desire to become more respectful and loving to the land and people. All in all, it is the major failing of religion. Nearly all religion is racist in origin. Everyone considers THEIR people to be THE PEOPLE or GOD's people. I wish everyone could get past religion and just completely embrace perfect love. We need to forget old notions of God and create new ways to seek the divine. If you are insisting that you have to follow a certain way to worship then you are mired in dogma, no matter what spiritual way you are following. Everybody needs to be quiet, take a step back from themselves and look at the larger picture of humanity and the cosmos. Peace, love, and Light.

  2. Actually, some Native Americans do appreciate whites becoming more like them, to the point of adopting some whites into their tribes. For concerns like cultural theft, remember that Europeans have a tribal ancestry, and practiced things like sweat lodges and drum circles, too. We can think of these and other tribal aspects as getting back to our European, African , Asian, and other roots, not as strictly Native American. As far as negativity in the Rainbow Family is concerned, I think that the Family sets this up for itself as a result of the policy of ONE-BIG-July 4th-GATHERING. Issues about where to Gather would be far less contentious if people had options from which to choose on July 4th. Black Hills type issues would not be as much of a problem if the Family had 2 or 3 July 4th Gatherings: East, West, and Central. Not like 2 Gatherings in the same region, like this year at possible Michigan and South Dakota. Refusing to accept multiple 7/4 Gatherings in different regions perpetuates controversies like that of the Black Hills.

  3. A lot of cultures are SAD, especially in their oppression and subjugation of women.

  4. Do the behaviors of those attending Rainbow REALLY reflect your words, which seem to almost make it some sacred religion....? I don't think so....it's a fun and love centered party in reality, isn't it?....be honest now.

  7. To whomever knows me and values my opinion:

It is my understanding that many people may be planning on coming to the Michigan regional rather than go to the National, or going anywhere else for that matter. .

TSK had a regional last year over the fourth, and only about 150 people came, and that seemed about a good size for the area. I was against doing it again this year because of this very issue, which is people seeing it as an alternative to the National Gathering for everybody, not just a few people in Michigan who couldn’t make it to the National.

So this is what I’ve got to say about it now:

If you are coming to Michigan rather than go to somewhere else because of whatever reason, and you think that it’s going to be in some nice spot, and there’s going to be the same old Turtle Soup Kitchen there doing the usual Turtle thing, you are most likely going to be disappointed.

The regular TSK members who have been doing it for all these years are going to be poorly represented in the making of this Gathering. I would suggest taking anything heard from people regarding this gathering with a grain of salt.

I don’t think it will be a healthy place to bring your tribe. It’s too close to town, and road runs right to it. There would be water shortages. You know, there’s a reason people from Michigan go away in the middle of summer when they can; it’s hot, humid, and there are a lot of bugs. Our National Forest’s are in smaller parcels than out west, and the’re spread around.

My advise is to not come to Michigan as an alternate gathering.

    David Darling.
